Mihail Golin - U.S. Military Fatality - Afghanistan

Mihail Golin
Sgt. 1st Class Mihail Golin, age 34, of Fort Lee, New Jersey, died in the line of duty on January 1, 2018, in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

Sgt. 1st Class Golin was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Carson, Colorado.

Mihail was serving in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel which is the U.S. military action against terrorism in Afghanistan.

Mihail was on a dismounted patrol in the Achin district of Nangarhar province when Afghanistani insurgents opened fire and wounded him. It has been reported that these insurgents were likely affiliated with ISIS. 

Tragically, Mihail succumbed to his injuries.

The incident is under investigation.

Mihail was born in Riga, Latvia and immigrated to the U.S.A. in 2004. He enlisted in the Army on January 5, 2005. He completed Special Forces training in November of 2014.

Mihail's awards and decorations include the Purple Heart Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, four Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Valorous Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, two Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.

Mihail's military comrades are in mourning over the death of their brother. He died in the service of America. He will be forever remembered.

Mihail's loved ones are devastated by his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He was loved. He will be forever mourned.

Mihail is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members who will forever miss him.
