La David Johnson - U.S. Military Fatality - Niger, Africa

La David Johnson
Sgt. La David T. Johnson, age 25, of Miami Gardens, Florida, died in the line of duty on October 4, 2017, in southwest Niger.

Sgt. Johnson was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

While on a reconnaissance patrol with members of the Niger Army, La David and three other American soldiers underwent an attack by Islamic insurgents. Tragically all four American men were mortally wounded.

The incident is under investigation.

American military personnel are in Niger to provide training and security assistance to the Niger Armed forces in their efforts to oppose violent extremists in the region.


La David attended Miami Carol City High School and later trained as an auto mechanic at ATI Career Training School. He enlisted in the Army as a lightwheeled vehicle mechanic in 2014. 

His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal; the Army Good Conduct Medal; the Global War on Terrorism Medal; the Army Service Ribbon; the Army Parachutist Badge; the Army Air Assault Badge; the Driver and Mechanic Badge; and the Marksmanship Qualification Badge - Sharpshooter with Rifle. La David also received Canadian Parachutist Wings after participating in operations with the Canadian Armed Forces in 2015.

Friends stated that La David was a regular at the gym and at church. He loved cycling

and cars. He was a hard worker and a loving husband and father. 


La David's military comrades at Fort Bragg are in mourning over the death of their brother. La David was a professional who died as a hero in the service of his country. He will be forever remembered.

La David's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was loved. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Oceans of tears have been shed for La David. 


La David is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and two children.

Pray for all who die in a foreign country, far from their loved ones.

Pray for all who die suddenly. They are with us one moment and are gone before we can say goodbye.

Pray that La David is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.

Pray, without ceasing, unto God for an end to all war. It is enough.
